In short
A plant is not a single substance; the amount of its active compounds varies from batch to batch. A standardised extract is processed so that each dose contains a guaranteed percentage of the active markers, the way the studied material did. Without a standardisation, a herb on a label tells you the species but not the strength. This is why every botanical in the Library is named with its standardisation, and why the numbers on the formulation are specific.
The species name on a supplement is only half the information. The other half is the percentage, and without it you do not know what you are taking.
01The problem with a plant name
Two capsules can both say the same herb and contain very different amounts of what makes it work. The concentration of active compounds in a plant depends on the species, the part used, where it grew, when it was harvested and how it was processed. Raw or unstandardised herb is therefore a moving target: the label names the plant, but not the dose of the thing that actually does something. Trials are run on defined material, so a product that does not define its material is not really matching the evidence.

02What standardisation does
Standardisation fixes the strength. By concentrating and testing to a target percentage of the marker compounds, it makes one dose equal to the next, and lets a product match the amount of active material used in the studies. It is the difference between a consistent, repeatable dose and a hope. Regulators and pharmacopoeias treat this consistency of herbal preparations as central to quality, which is why serious botanicals are defined this way.1
03Reading a standardisation
A standardisation names the marker and its percentage. Rhodiola standardised to 3% rosavins and 1% salidroside guarantees those actives in every dose. Ashwagandha at 5% withanolides, ginkgo at 24% flavone glycosides and 6% terpene lactones, saffron to its crocin and safranal content: each number states how much of the active fraction the extract is held to. When the Library names a dose, it names the standardisation with it, because the two together are the real information.
04What it does not guarantee
The honest limit
Standardisation guarantees a consistent amount of the marker compounds, not that those markers are the only active parts of the plant, nor that a given extract will work for everyone. A marker is a measurable stand-in for activity, not always the whole story of it. Standardisation is a quality floor that makes dosing honest and repeatable; it is necessary, but it is not on its own proof that the ingredient is effective.
05Why every page names it
This is why no botanical in the Library is described by species alone. Every ingredient page carries its standardisation and dose, because that pair is what ties the product to the evidence. A herb without a percentage is a name; a herb with one is a defined, repeatable dose, and only the second can be judged honestly.
