Why more is not better

The dose that works is not the largest one. Why supplement benefit follows a curve, not a straight line, and where the top of that curve sits.

In short

Supplement benefit does not rise forever with dose. For most active ingredients the relationship is a curve: benefit climbs, then plateaus, and beyond a point the extra dose adds risk without adding effect. The dose worth taking is the one that was actually studied and shown to work, not the largest number a label can print. LAYER ZERO doses to the studied, effective amount, not to a headline.

The instinct that a bigger number means a better product is exactly backwards for most of what goes into a supplement. Benefit follows a curve, and the top of the curve is the target.

01The dose-response curve

Nearly every active compound has a dose-response relationship, and for most it is not a straight line. Effect rises with dose up to a point, then flattens: past the plateau, more of the ingredient does not produce more of the benefit. Many nutrients follow an inverted-U, where the useful range sits in the middle and both too little and too much move you away from the best effect. The job of a formulation is to find that range, not to exceed it.

The curve is not hypothetical. Vitamin B6 contributes to normal nervous system function at food level doses, and causes sensory neuropathy when taken in high doses for long enough; the European safety limit was revised down to 12 mg a day for exactly that reason.2 For scale, the evening layer's 2 mg of P5P sits at a sixth of that limit, by design. Zinc beyond its tolerable limit interferes with copper absorption, trading one mineral's benefit for another's deficit.3 The same logic runs through this formulation's botanicals: bacopa's trials cluster around 300 mg of standardised extract, which is why that is the dose here, not a multiple of it.

The relationship between how much of a substance is taken and the size of its effect. For most supplement ingredients it is a curve that plateaus, so beyond a certain dose the additional amount adds cost and risk rather than benefit.

02The ceiling and the cost

Above the effective range, two things happen and neither is good. The benefit stops growing, so the extra dose is wasted, and the risk of side effects rises. For vitamins and minerals this is formalised: regulators set tolerable upper intake levels, the amount above which adverse effects become more likely.1 A responsible formulation stays inside those limits by design. More is not a stronger product; past the ceiling it is a worse one.

03The studied dose

The dose that means something is the one used in the trials that showed an effect. When a study finds a benefit, it finds it at a specific amount, and that amount is the honest target for a product. Doubling it does not double the evidence; it takes you off the map the research drew. This is why every ingredient page in the Library names a specific dose and form: those are the numbers the evidence actually supports.

04Where bigger backfires

The honest caveat

There are ingredients where a higher dose does mean more effect within a sensible range, and the curve differs from one compound to another. The point is not that less is always better, but that more is not automatically better, and often the studied middle is the right place to be. A label that boasts a very large number is making a marketing claim about size, not an evidence claim about benefit.

05Why the system is dosed this way
