The forms of magnesium

The same mineral behaves differently depending on what it is bound to. LAYER ZERO uses two forms, in two layers, on purpose.

In short

Magnesium is a mineral the body needs for hundreds of processes, and European authorities recognise its role in normal muscle and nervous-system function, psychological function, and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. What it is bound to changes how well it is absorbed and tolerated. LAYER ZERO uses magnesium malate in the daytime layer and magnesium bisglycinate in the evening layer, two forms chosen for two different jobs.

People ask how much magnesium is in a supplement. The more useful question is which magnesium, because the form decides how much actually reaches you and how it sits.

01Why the form matters

Magnesium is never taken on its own. It is always bound to something, a salt, and that partner changes its behaviour: how much dissolves, how much is absorbed, and how well the gut tolerates it. A review of magnesium absorption found that organic forms, where magnesium is bound to an organic acid or amino acid, tend to be better absorbed and better tolerated than cheap inorganic forms like oxide, which is poorly soluble and often passes through.1

So a large number on a label can mean very little. What reaches you depends on the form, and the form is a choice.

Definition · Elemental magnesium

The amount of actual magnesium in a compound, as opposed to the compound's total weight. A gram of magnesium bisglycinate is mostly the glycine it is bound to; only a fraction is magnesium itself. LAYER ZERO lists the elemental amount, which is what matters.

02Bisglycinate and malate

The two forms LAYER ZERO uses are both organic, and each is chosen for what its partner brings.

Magnesium bisglycinate binds magnesium to glycine, an amino acid. This form is known for being easy on the digestive system, which matters at the larger evening dose, and glycine itself is associated with calm rather than stimulation. It is a sensible magnesium to take before bed.

The evening form now has a direct test. A 2025 randomised placebo controlled trial gave magnesium bisglycinate to healthy adults with poor sleep and recorded improvements in self reported sleep measures against placebo. One trial does not settle a question, but it is the right form, tested the right way, at the right time of day.4

Magnesium malate binds magnesium to malic acid, a molecule that sits inside the body's own energy-production cycle. That pairing makes it a fitting choice for the daytime, where the layer is built around resilience and sustained output rather than winding down.

03Two forms, two layers

This is why the same mineral appears twice in the system, in different forms. LAYER TWO, the daytime layer, uses magnesium malate, delivering 80 mg of elemental magnesium. LAYER THREE, the evening layer, uses magnesium bisglycinate, delivering 156 mg of elemental magnesium, a larger amount in the calmer form suited to the hour.

Splitting magnesium across the day this way also spreads the dose, which is easier on absorption and tolerance than a single large amount taken at once.

04The sleep question

Magnesium is often sold as a sleep aid. The honest position is more restrained. A systematic review of magnesium for insomnia in older adults found only low-certainty evidence for an effect on sleep, meaning the studies are few, small, and not consistent enough to support a strong claim.2

What magnesium does have is a set of recognised roles that matter to an evening layer without overstating them: European authorities have authorised claims that magnesium contributes to normal nervous-system and muscle function, to normal psychological function, and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.3 That is the basis on which it belongs in the system, not as a sedative.

05What is still uncertain

Where the evidence is thinner

Direct head-to-head trials comparing magnesium forms in humans are limited, so the case for bisglycinate and malate rests more on absorption, tolerability, and the properties of their partners than on outcome trials pitting them against each other.1 And as above, the evidence for magnesium specifically improving sleep is low-certainty.2 We use magnesium for its established roles and its fit to each layer, and we do not present it as a sleeping aid.

06The research horizon

The magnesium literature is expanding on three fronts at once. The cognitive front: a second randomised controlled trial of magnesium L-threonate, published in 2025, found improvements in cognitive performance and sleep measures against placebo, replicating the 2024 result with an independent sample.5 The mood front: a 2023 meta-analysis of randomised trials found magnesium supplementation significantly reduced depression scores in adults with depressive symptoms, adding a pooled mood signal to the mineral's portfolio.6 And the population front, the most striking: UK Biobank neuroimaging in roughly six thousand adults linked higher magnesium intake to larger brain volumes and fewer white-matter lesions.7 Observational data cannot prove cause, but when the population-scale picture, the controlled trials, and the mechanism all lean the same way, the lean is the finding. Registered trials now running include a university study of magnesium for sleep and recovery in collegiate athletes. The oldest mineral in the formulary keeps opening new files.

07How LAYER ZERO uses this

Most products pick one magnesium and use it everywhere. LAYER ZERO treats the form as part of the design: malate in the day, bisglycinate in the evening, each matched to what that layer is for. It is the same logic as the rest of the system. The right thing, in the right form, at the right time.
