In short

L-theanine is an amino acid found almost only in tea. It produces a relaxed but alert state rather than sedation. A meta-analysis of 31 trials found that a single 200 mg dose reliably improves attention and modestly reduces acute stress, with no serious side effects. LAYER THREE uses 200 mg in the evening, to help arousal come down as part of the wind-down, not to force sleep.

Most things that calm you down also dull you. L-theanine is interesting because it does the first without much of the second, which is exactly what an evening layer needs.

01What L-theanine is

L-theanine is an amino acid found in the tea plant and almost nowhere else in the diet. It crosses into the brain and is associated with a state often described as relaxed alertness: lower arousal without the heaviness of a sedative.1 It is the reason a cup of tea can feel calm and clear at once, rather than either wired or drowsy.

02Calm without sedation

The distinction that matters is not that theanine relaxes you, but that it does so while leaving performance intact. A 2026 meta-analysis pooling 31 randomised trials found that a single 200 mg dose produced a robust improvement in attention, measured as faster choice reaction time, alongside a modest reduction in acute stress, and that it was well tolerated with no serious adverse events.1

The acute stress effect has direct support. In a controlled study, people given L-theanine before a stressful task showed smaller rises in the physiological stress response than those given a placebo.2 A four-week trial in healthy adults found improvements in stress-related symptoms and some cognitive measures over daily use.3 The picture is consistent: arousal down, alertness held.

03Why it sits in the evening

Recovery is a slope that starts before bed, and part of that slope is arousal coming down. We cover this in why recovery starts before bed. An ingredient that lowers arousal without sedating fits that window precisely. It supports the downshift the body is already trying to make, rather than overriding it the way a sleeping agent would.

This is why theanine is in LAYER THREE and not the morning layer. Its job in the evening is not to add alertness, which the day already has, but to take the edge off the arousal that keeps the wind-down from running.

04Why 200 mg, and why from tea

The 200 mg dose is not arbitrary. It is the single dose with the cleanest evidence: the meta-analysis found its attention and stress effects specifically at 200 mg.1 LAYER THREE delivers exactly that, from a green tea extract standardised to 98% L-theanine, so what you are getting is the amino acid itself rather than a variable amount of tea with its caffeine attached. In the evening, that separation matters.

05What is still uncertain

Where the evidence is limited

The stress-reduction effect is modest, and the meta-analysis notes it was influenced by lower-quality studies; the attention finding is stronger.1 Most trials are in healthy adults and short-term, so long-run effects are less well characterised. European authorities have not authorised a specific health claim for L-theanine, which is why we describe what the studies show rather than making a claim for the ingredient. It is not a sedative or a sleep drug, and we do not present it as one.

06The research horizon

Theanine's newest chapter is about scale and venue. The largest meta-analysis to date, 31 randomised trials, appeared in Molecular Psychiatry in 2026 and found robust short-term improvement in attention in healthy adults; an amino acid from tea leaves is now being examined in one of psychiatry's most demanding journals.4 On the sleep side, a 2025 meta-analysis in Sleep Medicine Reviews pooled 18 randomised trials and 897 participants and found improvements in sleep onset, daytime function, and overall sleep quality.5 A separate 2025 meta-analysis mapped where the cognitive effect lives: dose-dependent gains in rapid information processing and recognition speed, the exact machinery of a working day.6 The frontier is electrophysiological: EEG work is now tracing how theanine changes attention markers in the brain's own signals,7 and registered trials running through 2026 are pairing it with new compounds and new populations. The direction has not moved since 2008. The instruments measuring it have become sharper.

07How LAYER ZERO uses this

LAYER THREE is the evening layer, built to support the wind-down rather than to sedate through it. L-theanine is one part of that: the component aimed at arousal, lowering the internal signal so the slope toward sleep can run.
