In short

Most botanicals would be lucky to have five controlled trials. Ginkgo has hundreds, a pharmacopoeia specification, and a legal status most of the supplement aisle can only imagine. That record is the starting point.

01The most studied leaf in the world

Ginkgo biloba is the oldest living tree species, and its standardised leaf extract is the most clinically examined botanical preparation in existence. The refined extract specification, 24 percent flavone glycosides and 6 percent terpene lactones, is not a marketing number: it is the definition under which ginkgo holds well established use status in the European Medicines Agency's herbal monograph and is registered as an actual medicinal product in countries including Germany and France.8 When this formulation states 50:1, 24 and 6 percent, it is naming the same material the clinical literature tested. 02What a single dose does

The healthy adult evidence people rarely quote is acute, and it is good. In a double blind crossover trial in healthy young adults, single doses of standardised ginkgo produced dose dependent improvements in the speed of attention, measurable from two and a half hours and sustained to six.1 A companion study found improved performance on demanding serial arithmetic under the same conditions.2 These are exactly the hours and exactly the demand profile a morning formulation cares about: not a memory transplant, a faster, steadier processing speed through the working morning.

03The circulation story

Ginkgo's oldest reputation is vascular, and modern imaging backs it in humans. In a controlled MR perfusion study, four weeks of ginkgo at 60 mg doses increased regional cerebral blood flow in healthy older adults.3 An earlier crossover trial measured ocular blood flow rising around 23 percent against placebo.4 The mechanisms are among the best mapped in the botanical world: platelet activating factor antagonism from the terpene lactones, vasoregulation, and flavonoid antioxidant activity.

04Where the strongest outcomes live

The heaviest clinical results sit at 240 mg daily in older adults with cognitive complaints: meta-analyses pooling thousands of patients find improved cognition and daily function against placebo, with tolerability indistinguishable from placebo.56 That is medicinal territory at medicinal doses, and this page does not borrow it; the honest note for younger healthy users is that chronic memory improvement has not replicated the way the acute attention effects have. What the whole body of work establishes for our purposes is different and valuable: decades of human data, a clean safety profile at scale, and a compound whose vascular and attentional signals keep reproducing.

05The research horizon

The literature is still moving. A 2025 meta-analysis reconfirmed efficacy and safety of the standardised extract across patient subgroups, and current work runs from perfusion imaging in healthy adults to combination studies with other standardised botanicals.7 Ginkgo is one of the few plants where new trials arrive yearly onto a foundation of hundreds, which means the picture sharpens rather than resets. 06Why 60 mg, and why the morning
