In short

L-tyrosine is an amino acid the body uses to make dopamine and noradrenaline, the signalling molecules that stress and hard mental work deplete. A review of the human trials found that supplementing it helps cognition specifically under demanding conditions, such as stress, cold, or sleep loss, and does little when a person is rested and unchallenged. 01What L-tyrosine is

L-tyrosine is an amino acid, and specifically a precursor: the raw material the body converts into the catecholamines, dopamine and noradrenaline. These are central to attention, drive, and the acute stress response. The logic of supplementing tyrosine is straightforward. When demand runs these neurotransmitters down faster than the body replaces them, more of the building block can help keep production up.

02It works under load, not at rest

This is the finding that defines the ingredient. A review of tyrosine trials in both healthy and clinical populations concluded that it improves cognitive performance under demanding circumstances, stress, cold exposure, and sleep deprivation among them, while showing little to no benefit in comfortable, unchallenged conditions.1 The mechanism explains the pattern: if the neurotransmitters are not being depleted, there is nothing for extra precursor to replenish.

So tyrosine is not a general sharpener. It is a buffer against the cognitive cost of pressure, which is a narrower and more defensible claim, and the one we make.

03Why the morning layer

A buffer against demand belongs at the front of the day, before the load arrives. That places tyrosine in LAYER ONE, the morning layer, alongside the other ingredients aimed at focus and resilience. It is there for the days that ask a lot of you, which is precisely when the evidence says it does something.

04The dose question

Honesty about dose matters here. Many of the acute studies use large single doses of tyrosine, often a gram or more taken before a specific stressor. LAYER ZERO uses 500 mg daily, as one component of the morning layer rather than a single large pre-stress dose. We present it as steady, supporting supplementation of the precursor, and we are clear that this is not the same as the high acute doses used in some laboratory tests.

05What is still uncertain

Where the effect is conditional

Tyrosine's benefit is conditional on demand, so on an easy day it may do little.1 A few laboratory studies, using large acute doses under specific task designs, found no benefit or small costs to cognitive flexibility, a reminder that tyrosine is a demand tool rather than a daily enhancer. The 500 mg supporting dose here is a different context, held for the days that draw it down. Individual responses vary, the strongest data uses higher acute doses than a daily 500 mg, and there is no specific European authorised health claim for L-tyrosine. We include it for its precursor role under load, graded accordingly.

06The research horizon

The newest tyrosine work is doing something valuable: mapping the edges of where it acts, with growing precision. A 2024 randomised trial put 80 participants through a virtual reality active-shooter simulation, about as demanding as an experiment is allowed to get, and the tyrosine group missed significantly fewer responses on cognitive testing under that pressure.3 Computational neuroscience is meanwhile modelling what a single dose does to decision-making itself, finding shifts toward more deliberate, model-based control.4 Trials in heat and physical exertion have been less impressive, which sharpens rather than weakens the picture: tyrosine is a cognitive-demand compound, not an exercise aid, and the new data keeps drawing that line more exactly where this formulation always placed it. A registered trial on decision-making in stressful situations is in the pipeline. The compound's job description keeps getting more precise, and the job is the one the morning layer hired it for.

07How LAYER ZERO uses this

L-tyrosine fits the system because the system is built around demand across a real day, not a single perfect lab condition. It sits in the morning layer as the precursor that supports the neurotransmitters pressure draws down, quiet on the easy days and useful on the hard ones. That is a more honest promise than most ingredients make, and it is the one the evidence supports.
