Rhodiola rosea is an adaptogen, a plant traditionally used to help the body cope with fatigue and stress. The human evidence is real but modest and mixed: some controlled trials suggest a benefit for physical and mental fatigue, while the overall body of research is limited by study quality. 01What rhodiola is

Rhodiola rosea is a root that grows in cold, high-altitude regions and has a long history of traditional use for endurance and fatigue. Its activity is attributed mainly to two groups of compounds, rosavins and salidroside, which is why a serious extract is standardised to both. It is classed as an adaptogen: a substance proposed to help the body resist the effects of stress rather than to stimulate or sedate it.

02What the evidence shows

A systematic review of controlled trials found that several studies reported benefits of rhodiola for physical and mental fatigue, but concluded that methodological flaws and inconsistency across the trials made the overall evidence contradictory and hard to rely on.1 The signal is there; the certainty is not yet.

Later work is consistent with a modest effect. An open trial giving rhodiola over several weeks found self-reported improvements in stress, fatigue, and mood, though without a placebo group it cannot separate the extract from expectation.2 Taken together, the honest reading is a plausible, modest benefit for fatigue and stress, not a settled one.

03Why the morning layer

Rhodiola's proposed job is resilience under demand: helping the body hold up against fatigue across a working day. That places it in the morning, at the start of the load, not the evening. 04Why 133 mg, standardised

The number that matters with rhodiola is not just milligrams but standardisation. LAYER ZERO uses an extract standardised to 3% rosavins and 1% salidroside, so the active compounds are defined and consistent from batch to batch rather than left to vary with raw plant material. The 133 mg sits within the morning stack as one contributor among several, dosed to work with the layer rather than to dominate it.

05What is still uncertain

Where the evidence is limited

This is one of the more honestly graded ingredients in the system. The trials are heterogeneous, several are small or of limited quality, and results are not consistent.1 Some of the supporting data lacks a placebo control.2 There is no European authorised health claim for rhodiola. We include it for its plausible, modestly supported role in fatigue and stress resilience, and we grade that evidence as moderate at best. As the evidence grows, this page will grow with it.

06The research horizon

The newest rhodiola work is moving into applied territory. A 2025 randomised crossover in resistance-trained athletes found improved strength outcomes alongside better executive function under fatigue, measured by Stroop performance: the mental and physical effect in one protocol.3 A 2025 trial in basketball players reported improved sprint performance, aerobic capacity, and lower perceived fatigue across simulated games.4 The most unexpected new domain is the screen itself: a 2025 triple-blind trial found rhodiola reduced instability of ocular focus during sustained screen work, a first controlled result in digital eye strain.5 Systems-level reviews are meanwhile consolidating how rhodiola and ashwagandha regulate the stress axis at the molecular level,6 and a registered trial running through 2026 is testing cognitive performance after acute stress exposure. Small studies in new domains are how every established effect in this field started. The pattern here is an old signal finding new places to show up.

07How LAYER ZERO uses this
