02Evidence-supported steps
A short daytime nap is the most reliable countermeasure. In controlled work, a brief afternoon nap improved cognitive performance after lunch, and bright light added to the effect.1 The key is to keep it short, ten to twenty minutes, so you wake before deep sleep and avoid grogginess.
Caffeine works best combined with that nap. Because caffeine takes roughly twenty minutes to act, taking it immediately before a short nap means you wake as it begins to work, and the two effects stack. In studies of post-nap alertness, caffeine and bright light were the most effective steps for restoring alertness.2 Bright light on its own, ideally daylight, is a genuine, evidence-supported alerting signal.
03Reasonable practice
Below the evidence line sit habits that are sensible and low risk, but not strongly proven as dip countermeasures. A short walk or a few minutes of movement raises alertness through arousal. Water helps if you are even mildly dehydrated. A lunch that leans toward protein and vegetables rather than a large fast-carbohydrate load may make the dip feel gentler, though food modulates the dip rather than causing it. Treat these as reasonable defaults, not as fixes.

None of this removes the dip, and late-afternoon caffeine carries a cost: taken too close to the evening, it clears too slowly and damages the night, which sets up a worse tomorrow.
