01The accounting model
The modern framework comes from McEwen: allostasis is stability through change, the mobilisation of cortisol, adrenaline, glucose and attention that lets a body meet a demand bigger than the resting state can handle. The same mediators that protect in the acute case damage in the chronic one, when the response is fired repeatedly, held on, or never shut down.1 Stress hormones are not toxins; they are expensive tools, and the bill is called allostatic load.

02Load can sharpen
The first half of the accounting is that load works. Acute stress effects on cognition are selective rather than uniformly bad: a meta-analysis found working memory and flexibility impaired under acute stress while response inhibition actually improved, and the timing, intensity and duration of the stressor decide which way each function moves.23 This is the truth inside the old inverted U: some arousal outperforms none. The curve is a lens rather than a law, but the middle of it is where demanding work gets done.
03When load compounds
The second half is what unpaid load does. A systematic review of the allostatic load literature ties higher biomarker load to cardiovascular disease, worse physical and cognitive function, and all cause mortality.4 The signature is visible in the daily cortisol curve: a rhythm that stops falling properly at night, the flattened slope associated with worse outcomes across immune, metabolic and mental health domains.5 Chronic load does not announce itself as drama. It shows up as a rhythm that no longer switches off.
04Recovery is the active variable
What separates sharpening load from compounding load is what happens between demands. The occupational recovery literature is blunt about this: detachment, sleep and genuine respites restore what demand depletes, and their effects fade quickly when demand resumes without them, which means recovery is a repeated practice rather than an annual event.6 Training is the model case of load done right: a stressor applied on purpose, at a chosen dose, followed by recovery, which over time blunts the whole system's reactivity to other stressors.7 The organism that handles pressure best is not the one that avoids load. It is the one that cycles it.
05What a supplement can do
The honest limit
No capsule manages allostatic load. The levers with real leverage are sleep, light, training dose and the structure of the day, and they belong to you. What the formulation contributes is named and specific: an evening layer with trial evidence on the stress axis, described honestly on each ingredient's page, inside that structure. A supplement that claimed to remove stress would be claiming to remove the operating cost of being alive, and you should not believe it.
