Cortisol and the stress curve

Cortisol is not the villain it is sold as. It has a daily rhythm and a useful job, and the problem is when that rhythm flattens.

In short

Cortisol is marketed as the enemy, but it is a normal hormone with a daily rhythm: high in the morning to wake you, low at night to let you rest. Some stress, and the cortisol that comes with it, actually improves performance; too much or too constant is what causes harm. A flattened daily cortisol curve is associated with worse health. The goal is a rhythm that rises and falls cleanly, not the absence of cortisol.

Cortisol is not a toxin to be eliminated. It is a signal with a shape, and health depends on the shape being right rather than the level being low.

01What cortisol is

Cortisol is the body's main stress and wake hormone, released by the adrenal glands under the control of the brain's stress axis. It mobilises energy, sharpens attention and prepares the body to meet a demand. Far from being uniformly bad, it is essential: without it you could not wake up, respond to a challenge, or get through a hard morning. The question is never whether you have cortisol, but when and how much.

02The daily rhythm

Cortisol follows a strong daily curve. It rises sharply in the first hour after waking, providing the lift that gets you going, then declines across the day to a low at night that lets the body wind down. This rhythm is not incidental; a large meta-analysis found that a flatter daily cortisol slope, one that fails to fall properly across the day, is associated with worse mental and physical health outcomes.1 A healthy pattern is a clear peak in the morning and a clean fall by night, which is the same shape the evening layer is designed to protect.

03The stress-performance curve

Stress and performance broadly follow an inverted U, a pattern first described by Yerkes and Dodson. It is a useful lens rather than a law: the original experiments were narrow, and the shape describes tendencies, not a formula. Too little arousal and you are flat and unfocused; a moderate amount sharpens attention and drives performance; too much tips over into anxiety and impairment. Cortisol tracks this curve. The aim of a performance system is not to flatten stress to zero, which would leave you underpowered, but to keep you in the productive middle of the curve and out of the chronic, overshooting end.

04What a supplement can do

The honest limit

A supplement does not command the stress axis. What some ingredients can do is modest: ashwagandha has trial evidence for lowering elevated cortisol and perceived stress, and supporting a cleaner evening decline.2 That is specific, named support, KSM-66 at 300 mg with trial evidence behind it, inside a system governed mainly by sleep, light, load and behaviour. The lever is a healthier rhythm, not a suppressed hormone, and most of that lever is in how you live, not what you take.

05The research horizon

Cortisol research is moving from snapshots to timelines. Hair grows about a centimetre a month and stores cortisol as it grows, which makes a hair sample a three month stress archive; a 2023 meta-analysis confirmed hair cortisol tracks with blood pressure, validating it as a chronic-load biomarker rather than a mood ring.3 The shape of the daily curve is proving to matter more than its height: population cohort data links a flattened diurnal cortisol slope, the pattern this page describes, to cardiovascular mortality years later.4 The rhythm is the readout. Intervention studies are starting to move these chronic markers, not just momentary ones: a 2023 randomised trial found regular mindfulness practice lowered hair cortisol itself.5 And the engineering frontier is genuinely close: flexible sweat-sensing patches that read cortisol continuously are working in the lab, though no validated consumer device exists yet, and this page will say so plainly until one does.6 The direction of the whole field matches the premise here: stress is load, load leaves a record, and the record can be changed.

06How the system works with it
