In short

Most productivity advice chases a single sharp peak of focus. A steadier approach is to protect a block of uninterrupted time for one demanding task, because switching between tasks leaves a cognitive cost: attention residue that lingers on the previous task and degrades the next. The practical structure is a protected block, one task, interruptions removed, ideally placed in your naturally sharper hours. Much of this is sound principle and reasonable practice rather than clinical proof, and we say so.

The aim is not a heroic hour of peak focus. It is a repeatable block of protected attention, which is a more durable thing to build a day on.

01Peak-chasing vs structure

Chasing a stimulant peak treats focus as a spike to be summoned. The trouble is that a spike fades, and often has to be repaid, which is the same pattern described in peak vs. baseline. Structuring attention instead means designing the conditions under which sustained focus is likely, and then protecting them, so you are not relying on a chemical high to carry a long task.

02What the evidence suggests

The strongest single reason to protect a block is the cost of switching. Research on attention residue found that when people move from one task to another, part of their attention stays stuck on the first, and performance on the second suffers, particularly when the first task was left unfinished.1 Every interruption, every quick check of a message, is a switch that leaves residue. A protected block is valuable precisely because it removes those switches, letting attention settle fully onto one thing.

03How to build a block

The structure is simple. Choose one demanding task, not a list. Protect a fixed window for it and remove the obvious sources of switching: notifications off, messages closed, phone out of reach. Place the block where your attention is naturally sharper, which for most people is the morning rather than the post-lunch dip, matching the rhythm described in the circadian day. Keep blocks to a length you can actually sustain, and take a real break between them rather than sliding into shallow tasks.

When an interruption cannot be refused, the evidence points to one specific counter move: before you switch, write a one line plan for exactly where you will resume. In experiments this ready to resume plan reduced attention residue and improved performance on the interrupting task.2 Observational workplace research puts the cost of a full interruption at just over twenty minutes of re-engagement, which is what the plan buys back.3

04Where this is softer

The honest position

This protocol rests more on cognitive-science principle and reasonable practice than on clinical trials. Attention residue and the cost of task-switching are well described in the laboratory, but the specific advice, block lengths, timing, routines, is sensible structure rather than proven prescription. Treat it as a reasoned framework to adapt, not a protocol with the evidence weight of the sleep and caffeine pages.

05The research horizon

The newest attention research has quietly rewritten what actually works, and it favours this protocol's design. The famous claim that a phone merely sitting on the desk drains your brain is real but smaller than the headlines said: a 2023 meta-analysis of 22 studies measured the mere-presence effect and found it strongest for memory tasks, modest overall.4 More telling is what does not work: a 2025 randomised trial silenced 95 percent of participants' notifications for a week and found no improvement in productivity, vigilance, or distraction, while fear of missing out went up.5 Turning off the pings is not the intervention. Structure is. The block, the single task, the defined start and end: those are the levers the settings menu cannot pull, which is why this protocol is built on them. The 90 minute figure itself is a practical heuristic rather than a biological constant, and we say so; what the research defends is the architecture, and the architecture is the point.
