01What pine bark is
Pine bark extract is drawn from the bark of the French maritime pine, Pinus pinaster, and standardised to a high concentration of proanthocyanidins, the same family of polyphenols found in grape seed and cocoa. These are potent antioxidants, and the mechanism most consistently reported for pine bark is support of the endothelium, the inner lining of blood vessels, where it is associated with greater availability of nitric oxide and improved vascular function. 02What the evidence shows
The clearest evidence for pine bark is cardiometabolic. A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis pooled 27 randomised controlled trials in 1,685 participants and found statistically significant reductions across several markers: systolic and diastolic blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, HbA1c and LDL cholesterol.1 The effect sizes are modest, a few points on each measure, but they are consistent and they point in the same direction across a large number of trials, which is more than most botanicals can show.
A 2024 review of the randomised trial literature reaches the same conclusion and adds the mechanistic thread: much of the benefit tracks back to endothelial function and antioxidant activity, the vascular lining working better rather than any stimulant effect.2 This is the reasoning behind placing it in the daytime layer, where the goal is steadier output under load rather than a peak.
03Why the daytime layer

Several cognitive trials are small, not always fully blinded, and a number are linked to the branded extract's manufacturer, which is a reason for caution rather than confidence. There is also no European authorised health claim for pine bark proanthocyanidins. We include it for its cardiovascular and antioxidant evidence, which is real and moderate, and we do not lean on the cognitive claims.
05The research horizon
Pine bark extract now has one of the widest controlled-trial footprints in the botanical world. A 2024 systematic review counted 39 randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials with 2,009 participants across ten outcome domains, from cognition to vascular function to recovery.3 A 2025 meta-analysis of 27 randomised trials and 1,685 participants quantified the cardiometabolic side: lower blood pressure, fasting glucose, and LDL against placebo.4 The most interesting frontier is what happens after swallowing: human pharmacokinetics shows gut bacteria convert the procyanidins into a metabolite called M1, which is taken up into red blood cells and vascular tissue, meaning the microbiome itself helps activate the compound.5 A Swiss university hospital is currently running a quadruple-blind trial of pine bark extract in post-COVID condition, with cognition and fatigue among the endpoints, and the NIH LiverTox database assigns pine bark its most favourable safety category: unlikely cause of liver injury, no cases on record. Broad, deep, and still moving.
