01A kitchen root, engineered

Alpinia galanga is a member of the ginger family and one of the foundational aromatics of Thai and Indonesian cooking, in continuous culinary use for well over a thousand years. That food history matters twice: it gives the raw material one of the longest human exposure records any ingredient can offer, and it explains why researchers were comfortable taking it into controlled trials. enXtra is the branded, standardised extract of that root, built so that every dose delivers a consistent phytochemical profile rather than whatever the market's galangal happened to contain. Standardisation is what turns a spice into a study material.

02The flat line

The first randomised, placebo-controlled trial was published in 2017. A single 300 mg dose improved alertness and sustained attention from one hour through five hours post-dose, against placebo, in healthy adults.1 The same program tested the combination with caffeine and found the most practically useful result in the file: taken alongside caffeine, enXtra held attention through hour five, exactly where the caffeine-only condition let it drop.1 A second randomised trial in 2018 reproduced the acute alertness effect in an independent cohort.2 Two further small crossover studies in 2024 point the same direction. The endpoint never moves: not intensity, duration.

The trials measure alertness at intervals from one to five hours post-dose. Five hours is the length of a working morning, which is why the trial design and the morning layer describe the same object.

03Daily use without tolerance

Stimulants fade with repetition; the receptor adapts and the dose that worked in January does less by March. So the 2020 trial asked the question that decides whether an ingredient belongs in a daily system: does the effect survive daily use? Over 12 weeks of daily 300 mg dosing, the alertness effect held, with no tolerance build and no withdrawal signature on stopping.3 An ingredient that performs on day one and still performs in week twelve is measuring something different from stimulation. That result, more than any single acute number, is why enXtra earned its place in LAYER ONE.

04The 2026 anchor

The newest addition is the largest. Published in 2026, the latest program enrolled 255 adults across two randomised, placebo-controlled cohorts and confirmed the acute alertness effect at a scale the earlier trials could not fund.4 Small early trials that later replicate at scale are the best version of an evidence story: the 2017 result was not an artefact of a small sample, it was an early read of an effect that held when the sample quadrupled. Nine years, five randomised trials, one direction.

05Mechanism and the research horizon

The proposed active compound is 1'-acetoxychavicol acetate, ACA, with work pointing toward acetylcholine and dopamine signalling in attention networks as the likely route; EEG data from the trial program shows changes consistent with sustained attention rather than arousal.1 The mechanism is proposed rather than settled, which is the normal state for a botanical at this stage. One thing said plainly, once: the trials to date were funded by the ingredient's developer, which is how branded ingredients are built, the same way sponsors fund the trials behind most medicines. The record now spans nine years and five randomised trials, the newest at genuine scale, and the direction has not wavered. Independent replication is the next milestone, and this page will carry it when it lands.

06Why 300 mg, and why the morning
