The anchor of the modern record is a randomised controlled trial in elite rowers, published in 2021. Heavy training is one of the cleanest human models of immune suppression: during the hardest blocks, immune cell counts and cytokine balance measurably deteriorate, which is why hard-training athletes get sick at the worst possible times. In this trial, standardised astragalus extract attenuated that exercise-induced immunosuppression, holding immune parameters through training weeks that pushed the placebo group's markers down.1 That is not a soft endpoint. 05The research horizon
Astragalus research is accelerating rather than winding down. The polysaccharide fraction is the subject of a fast-growing pharmacological literature, with 2025 reviews and meta-analyses consolidating its immunological effects, and clinical work continuing in immunology and supportive care.25 One purified astragalus molecule is separately in trials as a telomerase activator, a different lane entirely and mentioned only for completeness.
